According to the National Blindness Prevelance Survey 2006, The magnitude of blindness in Pakistan is estimated at 1.49 to 1.54 million people.
It is estimated that there are 945,000 blind people in Punjab; 310,000 in Sindh; and 85,000 in Balochistan and 183,000 in the North Western Province. Most of this blindness is preventable and or treatable.
Approximately 70% of people affected by blindness in Pakistan live in remote areas of the country and are unable to travel to cities where the majority of services are located.
In 1998 The Fred Hollows Foundation began working in Pakistan to train and equip medical personnel to bring sight restoring surgery to every corner of Pakistan.
Every minute of the day, someone is having their eye sight restored as a result of The Foundation's Pakistan-Australia District Eye Care Program.
