The Fred Hollows Foundation is supporting the work of Tilganga Eye Centre in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) of China. 

Outreach Microsurgical Eye Clinics (OMECs) play an important role in serving the poorest people in the most remote and underserved areas of the TAR. OMECs also help to reduce the enormous backlog of cataract cases.

In 2007 five OMECs have been planned for various rural counties of TAR including Damxung, Ngari, Nangatse and Gyangtse.

Capacity building activities will also be carried out in TAR and will include the training of doctors and technicians on the maintenance of ophthalmic equipment, theatre procedures, patient flow and care. The training will take place at the Lhasa Institute of Eye Care.
